If you would like to learn more about holistic education, we recommend that you have a look at the work of Ron Miller, who has written extensively on the topic. Key books include What are schools for and The Self-Organizing Revolution. Ron has also spoke at the Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) conference in 2014 and they have published a great summary of his work.
AERO has got an excellent range of alternative education material in their online bookshop there is literature on holistic education as well as on individual alternatives. In the UK, Fiona Carnie provides a summary of alternative education provision in the UK in Alternative Approaches to Education which introduces the reader to Steiner, Montessori education and others.
Recently, several more books on the topic of alternative education have been published in the UK. Peter Mortimer's Education Under Siege critically comments on the shortcomings of the UK's education system and Peter Kraftl introduces the Geographies of Alternative Education.
Our 2015 conference keynote speaker Philip Woods has also published a book, entitled Alternative Education for the 21st Century. It is a unique collection of leading examples of education grounded in alternative philosophies and cultures – from initiatives to create more democratic schools, through Quaker, Buddhist, Islamic, Montessori and Steiner/Waldorf schools, to Maori and First Nations education in Canada and Palestinian Jewish schools in Israel.
